Make Your Own Cool Herbal Teas

by Greenthumb on August 27, 2010

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…

Well. not so much when temperatures are in the *90′s and *100′s for long periods.

I make herbal teas (or tisanes) year round, but when the weather heats up, I really need to cool down, so I make sun tea. Herbal of course!

If you are growing herbs, it is incredibly easy to make your own herbal sun tea.

All you need is a handful of crushed herbs, a jar of cool water, and sunny spot where your tea can brew.

Some herbs that will cool you down-

Any of the mints will do the trick. I also like the lemony herbs for flavor, so I might add some Lemon Balm or Lemon Verbena. Because I have it, I will toss in a leaf or two of Stevia for a bit of sweetness, but it is not necessary.

Sunny Herbal Tea

Just take your crushed herbs, pop them into a jar, add cool water, put on the lid, and set them in a sunny place for the day. If you have an herb bag, or a piece of muslin you can tie the herbs up in that and drop that in to the jar so you don’t have to strain later.

Later that afternoon or evening you can strain the leaves out, or pluck out the herb bag.

Now, taste your tea. If it’s too strong just add some water.

If you like it sweeter, add some honey -or sweetener of choice- and then your ice cubes. Now you get to enjoy your tea!

I will sometimes use a slice of orange, or lemon as a garnish.

Make sure you keep any leftover tea in the ‘fridge. The tea will keep for a day or so until the flavor goes off. You’ll know if it does…

In the heat of summer I make a jar of sunshine herb tea almost every day- so I can have it the following day.
