USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

This map shows the average annual cold winter temperatures around the nation. Check your area to find what “zone” you are in.

When you are herb gardening outdoors, this map can help you choose the plants best suited for surviving winters in your area.

Like me, you might decide to grow herbs that will not over winter in your area, and that’s just fine. Just be aware that you will need to replace those herbs each year, or bring them indoors for the winter months.

US Heat Map

Many plants do not perform well when the heat is high.  Besides drying out and suffering heat stress, high temperatures can render plants unable to set flowers or produce fruit. The heat map can tell you the average number of days per year that the temperatures rise above 86* in your area.

Looking for herbs?

I buy lots of seeds and try new plants every year to see what will grow well in my garden.

Some of the nurseries I use are listed below, and all the nurseries listed ship seeds and live plants.

Richters Herbs All sorts of herbs-culinary herbs, medicinal, dye, everlastings, bee plants, books, supplies and more. Terrific color catalog. Located in Canada, so shipping doesn’t take place all year!

Companion Plants All kinds of herbs here too,  including the bee plants, dye plants, medicinal herbs and lots more. Companion Plants is an Ohio based nursery.

Horizon Herbs Known for their medicinal herb seeds, Horizon Herbs also carries books, herb plants, vegetable seeds, and more. Located in Oregon.

Sandy Mush Herbs Herbs-plants and seeds. You can download their most recent catalog from the website. Sandy Mush is located in beautiful Asheville, NC

Often you can find the ‘basic herbs’ like basil, sage, cilantro, rosemary, parsley, and more at local garden centers and nurseries and even ‘super’ stores. If you have no luck, searching online will usually reveal herb nurseries in your part of the world.
